Prime Minister Rudd responds to demands from Meryl Dorey

On August 12 2013, in this term’s election cycle, anti-vaccination crusader and leader of the anti-vaccination Australian Vaccination Network, laid down her template for the future; a challenge to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, if you will:

AVN 6516 Dorey tweet to PMGiven that Dorey has been a successful and formidable protagonist for legislative change, this was not a challenge at which any Prime Minister should sniff. Dorey is a juggernaut. She has successfully changed the Health Care Complaints Act, so that unpalatable health practices are now more easily held to account. And she has successfully changed Section 11 of the Associations Incorporation Act 2009, as to what constitutes an appropriate name for NGOs and charities, making it easier to demand inappropriate organisation names to be changed. This is not a person to be ignored.

Well, today, the Prime Minister has been forced to act on Dorey’s challenge, From the ABC:

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will announce that those who do not vaccinate their children will not get the Family Tax Benefit A end-of-year supplement.

AVN PM repsonse to DoreyHe had no choice. Once Dorey issues forth with her demands, challenges, and proclamations, parliaments and leaders must act.

About reasonable hank

I'm reasonable, mostly.

  1. Paul Jones says:

I think we should consider Meryl for PM. We get her to make the decisions, then do the exact opposite. Seems to work, yes?

  2. matutines says:

I know I speak for many people when I thank Ms Dorey for her inportant contribution to the health of all Australians. I note she and her tireless supporters are working on initiatives in the areas of Homeopathy, Chiropractic and Chemtrails. We all look forward to congratulating them on progress in these important areas.

  3. sirboabtree says:

Abbot should also release a statement confirming bipartisan support for vaccination stance. Then it would be time for her to pack up her bucket and spade and move back to the USA where her brand of ‘science’ is not only accepted but expected. Evidence based medicine not bullshit and hype.

  4. sianmorton says:

I am going to go through Reasonable Hank withdrawals when/if the rate of publication slows up. Great work.

  5. Oh, the LULZ. Good Work, Meryl.

  6. Nathan says:

I am filled with warm, nourishing schadenfreude, and I hope that Meryl knows we’re all pointing at her and laughing, all the time.

  7. Annette Bannon says:

I am so impressed with Meryl, I am going to send her my electricity bill.
I am sure with her skills, I will never see another one!

  8. But wait, there’s more. When I wrote to the NSW Attorney General about Meryl’s abuse of the AVO system, the reply included this:

“Having said that, I advise that the Department of Attorney General and Justice is currently completing a statutory review of the Act. The review is considering whether the policy objectives of the Act remain valid and whether the terms of the Act remain appropriate for securing those objectives. Various issues regarding APVOs including options to address concerns regarding frivolous and vexatious applications are being considered in the review. It is anticipated that the reforms arising from the review are likely to be extensive”.

So she is contributing to changes in the law to stop people applying for Apprehended Personal Violence Orders for purposes for which such orders were not intended.

Is there anything she can’t get changed in the law?

  10. Rod Craven says:

Pity she can’t get the Immigration Act changed on allowing non-citizens to run business and even ngos and even allowing non-citizens to run for office. We could see something miraculous happen if only citizens of the country could set up business, register as an ngo or even run for any type of office here. Back to America you go, Meryl.

  11. I think she’s naturalised.

    • Rachel says:

      Nothing natural about her.

      • wzrd1 says:

She’s naturalized enough for Australia that perhaps the US can forget her former citizenship.
Doggone it, that Constitution thing got in the way. :/

Oh well, if she ever shows up home, there *is* the second amendment. Barricade the airport with rusty guns. I’m sure there are a few old battleship guns about somewhere…
Though, an aircraft carrier carries far more weight, nah, it’s outnumbered by small arms in mass (the aircraft carrier, that is).

Full disclosure, the last bit was a feeble, late night joke. After dealing with my aged father’s sundowning, then his desire to sit up to meet my mother when she comes home from work.
In my life, there were two things I always feared I’d have to do.
1: Have to inform someone that their spouse is long dead and they forgot it. That was tonight.
2: Get informed that my spouse is long dead and I forgot it.
As I informed my godson that daddy would not return home, as he died in the line of duty, I have a special dislike for that task.
My mother died a dozen years ago suddenly.

Never saw my godson after he and his mom departed our base.
But, I’ll never forget my own feelings or his howl of horror in learning about losing his father.
That paled behind my task earlier this night.

So, my apologies if my humor is off.
Well, more off than my usual gallows humor.

  12. Andy says:

It would be nice, once all these laws have been changed, if a department – any department – actually did something useful with them and got the AVN shut down. But given that Rudd has left a religious loophole in his policy (because kids from religious families don’t catch or spread diseases) I don’t imagine AVN acolytes will really be too concerned (though I expect they will have a lot to say about it).

    • wzrd1 says:

Andy, those with religious objections that are well documented from recognized religions are few and far between.
There is nothing that would prohibit a Protestant, any form of Catholic, Coptic Christian, Muslim, Jew for a start, from being vaccinated. Even the Amish in my area get vaccinated, as well as all around the nation.
It really comes down to enforcing the law and confirming, then rejecting specious claims of religious objection for those wishing to be non-compliant with the law.

  13. Andy says:

Oh, and does the Wikileaks Party support vaccination? They seem to be AVN’s last hope.

    • wzrd1 says:

Wow, I actually looked up the Wikileaks Party. I had actually thought it was a joke when I heard its name in the past.
      Just… Wow.

I suspect that you’re right though.
