Anti-vaccine chiropractors 15

The Chiropractic Board of Australia has had enough:

“We will not tolerate registered chiropractors giving misleading or unbalanced advice to patients, or providing advice or care that is not in the patient’s best interests,” chairman Phillip Donato said.

Dr Donato said chiropractors should only provide evidence-based treatment and anyone with concerns should report them. [Sydney Morning Herald August 9 2013]

Mr David Cahill is the business owner at Cahill Chiropractic, in Melbourne. He is a former board member of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, and at one time he was even the president of the ASRF. From his business site:

Cahill 6 ASRF Governor President professional pageOnly two days ago, Cahill issued a direct challenge to the Chiropractic Board of Australia, on his Facebook page. In a startling display of misplaced hubris he prodded at the CBA with a Tomljenovic quote which is, of course, untrue:

In the Western world cervical cancer is a rare disease with mortality rates that are several times lower than the rate of reported serious adverse reactions (including deaths) from HPV vaccination.” Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine policy and evidence-based medicine: Are they at odds? Tomljenovic, L: Annals of Medicine, Volume 45, Number 2, March 2013, pp. 182-193(12)

With that quote I may have attracted your attention, and indeed the attention of the Chiropractors Registration Board (Australia). The Board has issued a directive regarding chiropractors discussing the issue of vaccinations with their patients, and indeed in any public forum.

Cahill 1 Tomljenovic HPV deaths lieHe goes on to substantiate his anti-vaccine rhetoric, claiming that he and other chiropractors are more than capable of understanding the literature, by citing two more discredited articles by Tomljenovic and Shaw

And he rounded off the post with this:

The bottom line is that as each 12 year old girl that lines up to receive their vaccination, they are doing so based upon information that is NOT EVIDENCE-BASED, but rather, upon UNSUBSTANTIATED CLAIMS. Now does that sound familiar?

Of course it is not the job of the Chiropractors Registration Board to police the medical profession. There is a Medical Registration Board to do that. It appears they are unable to do so.

I, for one, cannot sit idly by and not relate these issues to my patients. I will do it quoting from the literature. I will ALWAYS have my patient’s best interests at heart, and I will never make unsubstantiated claims. I just wish others in the healthcare arena could hold their hand on their heart and say the same thing.

Okay. Again, here is why Cahill shouldn’t talk about vaccination, especially the HPV immunisation: Tired of HPV immunisation misinformation? Here’s a new published review.

And chiropractors, Messrs Pyke and Yeo thought Cahill’s screed was great:

Well done champ. Well done.

Well done champ. Well done.

So what else has Cahill got to offer on his business’s page?

The three reasons not to vaccinate, again, based on deliberate logical fallacies:

Over to you, again, CBA.
