About

This is an opinion blog. My opinions can be taken with a grain of salt, if you so desire. However, as is obvious, I like to use a lot of screenshots of publicly available images, which are used under Fair Dealing.

I like evidence. I like it a lot. And, I like evidence to remain even after it has been removed by those who hide things in retrospect. Many of these publicly available images are taken from public Facebook posts.

As per Facebook user agreements, you allow anyone to use your public posts in any manner they wish, just by signing into Facebook. If you don’t like it, go private, or leave Facebook.

I will sometimes present information from a private forum, but, only in the public interest.

I am not a health care professional. I am not a scientist. I rely heavily on them, and their evidence. I am an average schmuck who dislikes the hypocrisy, lack of empathy, lack of integrity, lack of ethics, and lack of evidence by those who would want you to believe them to be devoid of those traits. And I dislike it when they do it for your hard-earned, and to the detriment of public health.

I live in a rented house. I drive a crap car. The Big Pharma cheques just aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

Comments

If you comment, know this: any anti-vaccine lies, or other related offensive and conspiratorial comments, shall not pass.

If you make unfounded statements about good people, you shall not pass.

I may or may not use any comment you make, whether published or not – made in this blog, or in email, or anywhere on the internet – in any future post; or just to point and laugh, on Twitter and Facebook.

Some people have difficulty investigating me. They wonder who I am. They guess at my real name, even though it is included on this page in various forms 38 times (at last count – sigh):

Some nicer compliments of myself include the following testimonials, and these death threats against me and my family, from Frank (Francisco, Cisco, Frankie, Dolmio and/or Joseph) Vazquez:

Your a fucing dead man walking cunt – Frankie Vazquez: supporter of Meryl Dorey and the Australian Vaccination Network; supporter of Stephanie Messenger; supporter of Sherri Tenpenny; supporter of Mark Aldridge, serial electoral try-hard; supporter of Ann Bressington, South Australian member of parliament. He’s a murderer Belgin Colak-Arslan: administrator of Anti-Vaccination Australia who wrongfully targeted an innocent man, his child, his wife, his siblings, his elderly parents, and his workplace, mistakenly believing that he is Reasonable Hank, because his surname is “Tiernan”.

Shawn Dhu made this video testimonial on June 9 2016:

Hanks won Skeptics of the year in 2004. He said in an article that he wasn’t able to go but Ken McLeod went to collect on his behalf. From what others have said, they were arguing on thread posts with Hanks, & then Ken McLeod jutted in answering back on the same subject. So I reckon this guy is actually Ken McLeod! Hanks has slandered so many professionals, a lot in the chiropractic industry. He even slandered one chiropractor for making a hospital visit to treat her friend! And said she must step down from her chiropractic association. What a nasty piece of works he is! He has tried to defame so many, I was thinking it would be best that we all work collaboratively to bring him down. Renata Bialkowska has a WordPress blog set up specifically for this purpose. She is happy to upload anyones’ written piece against Hanks to set the record straight – Lo Mong Bridge.

Truth be told Hank has no heart Cassidy Coulsen: Anti-Vaccination Australia member.

So McLeod, founder of stop the avn, seems to be hank and Tierney. Hank won a sceptics award and Tierney accepted on his behalf, jokes were made about them never being seen together. It’d be safe to assume that with all of the twisted units in savn, it’s likely that a few of them post under Tierney and hank though.

Also, I like your articles, they are like a big tree, one which I can piss on & do a shit under, thanks for the shade. By the way, WANK, you don’t have an operating brain at all. You are one of the TOTAL LOSERS. HANK THE WANK can’t stop it as has made him blind many years ago. I don’t give a WHank that you won’t pass my comments, idiot, I an content enough just to have you read it & know that you are really, really dumb. I am a S.A. made man as well, & can see the total truth of everytthing Ann says. And Plebisick deserves to die by way of fluoride poisoning, she is a piece of shit, just like you, limp dick.
For the rebuttal of Trevor, your wank-mate’s, imbecile remarks:
“It says it all when people can’t actually engage you in argument but chose to insult you or make accusations based upon their own depraved value system. Also, at least one needs to watch the Sesame Street episode bought to us by the Letter “U””
1stly, you have earned every insult you get, there is nothing else to offer to wanks who can’t see, hear or speak of the evil as it has always existed. To you atheists, there is no such thing as evil, wrong, bad, etc. & when there is it is the opinions of others who expose that ‘thing’ you can’t see.
THIS WhANK BRAND MORON is just like you, neither of you can hear the other side of the debate, nor acknowledge the sources or their credibility as a source or as a fact. It is you lot who can’t engage in a debate because you can’t acknowledge anything outside your stupid bubble of COGNITIVE DISSONANCE TO TRUTH that you exist in. You’re pathetic & need to start using your brain rather than your arse to ‘think’ with.
As for Trevors “U” comment. This is as facile as any remark on the other side of the debate that you can’t engage in because you haven’t got the mental equipment for an accurate reflection of the real from the fictitious.
p.s. I say that Ann B is a good woman, cleaRly you can’t hear her at all, Like that political liar crap pile Plebisick, you too are a bad person who makes the unfounded statements about good people. YOU NEED TO WAKE UP PAL.

One has to ponder the ad hominem attack as rationale for objection, then the moniker of the one posting the inanity worthy of a Chimpanzee.
One only is thankful for not being in person, lest one endure a scat throw.

Let’s try for a more rational, intellectual version:
Hank, you are a caca poopyhead.
You keep confusing the ISSUES with silly little things that don’t matter, like FACTS.
        HoW dArE yOu?!

Or some other inane combination of uppercase and lowercase that somehow prove a point that none with three operational brain cells can grasp. 😉

        Keep up the good work!

        A lot OT:
If you know any Commonwealth medical legal eagles, there is a really active discussion regarding the fate of *all* diagnostic imagery on mediawiki. Even patient uploaded DICOM data is to be deleted if consensus isn’t arrived at.
The objector made the strange claim that the “x-ray technician owns the copyright to all imagery”. Interesting, as from my understanding of UK common law derivatives, it’s essentially the facility that owns or leases the equipment that owns the rights to the physical information, the result (imagery) seems to be variable in who owns it internationally (facility in many, patient in others, unknown in most).
If you know anyone who can further *real and legal* information and custom, the discussion is at:
        https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Requests_for_comment/Xrays#Authorship.2FCopyright_of_x-ray_images_.E2.80.94_what_is_known_so_far

I can’t even find case law or legislation on that for the US and I’m rather good at finding such.
Weird for a technology that is over a century old now.

Thanks to all for any input. Gotta run. My father is having a really bad dementia night.

Self- awareness really is a foreign concept to conservatives isn’t it. I mean I honestly thought this was high level meta satire for the first two paragraphs and then realised this bizarre stream of consciousness rant was, in the eyes of its author, a brilliantly written post that won him the argument

I mean just wow, it’s stunning and scary to think what it must be like to live inside that bizarre skull all day, every day 24/7. I can’t even bring myself to dislike the writer of this post, I feel a genuine sense of pity for the poor guy, to be so delusional must be some kind of evolutionary defense mechanism to stop him from killing himself

And the thing that makes it art is the poor guy, without any sense of irony at all labels himself ‘ thinking man’s man’ I mean….. That is just priceless

      • Mijow says:

“Self- awareness really is a foreign concept to conservatives…”

Conservatives? I’m fairly sure that this sort of stupidity transcends political ideology. There are probably just as many rabid anti-vaxxers on the extreme left as on the extreme right. (For instance, I remember reading about a branch of the Greens in Townsville who posted something about a medical conspiracy regarding the safety of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine.)

  5. “COGNITIVE DISSONANCE TO TRUTH ‘ would be an excellent band name !

  6. Thinking Chiro says:

    Dear Reasonable Hank,
Thankyou for achieving more in three months of blogs than John Reggars and thinking chiro’s with a brain have not been able to do in 20 years. If you question subluxation the vocal, passionate, blinkered minority accuse you of treason. The term was invented 100 years ago by the early chiro’s (who were practicing like orthopods) to differentiate themselves from doctors, so they would not be jailed for practicing medicine without a licence. It was legal smoke and mirrors that over time got set in concrete.
COCA proactively brought in policies on vaccination, risk management, continued education, practice audits, dialogue and joint conferences with physio’s, osteo’s, GP’s, specialists etc right from the outset. The CAA only change when someone shines a torch on them. They only react and are rarely proactive or show leadership. The ASRF is in the right position, at the right time, with the necessary resources to support the important and expensive large scale trials into the basics on spinal manipulative therapy that are required.
    Keep up the good work.
    Thankyou again.
    Best wishes
    Thinking Chiro

    • Thanks so much, TC. I’m not sure the ASRF is going to repay your faith in them, unless they undergo an overhaul. They can begin by rejecting subluxations, and the anti-vaccinationists on their board.

I HOPE THE ASRF READ THIS AND DROP SUBLUXATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • This post, by The Rogue Chiro, came out yesterday. It’s a bit of an eye opener into the ASRF’s lack of research, and lack of funding for research, given its income.

Hi Thinking Chiro and Hank if u read this could you please let me know your views on acupuncture?

20 years ago when I was 17 I had a trapped nerve in my back which made playing soccer almost impossible, we spent money on physio that didn’t help but then our Family GP who happened to be Chinese suggested acupuncture which he performed covered by medicare. After the 4 week course of treatment I was as good as new, he used the electrical current method where mini jumper leads pulsed electricity through the acupuncture needles

Strangely one of the things that gave me confidence in the treatment is that when I asked my doctor how it worked, his answer was
” well there’s lots of theories, but the honest answer is nobody really knows for sure how, we just know it works”

I have always wondered whether it was the acupuncture or whether it was just the 4 weeks rest that cured me, though to be fair my Dad had acupuncture on his back and at another time on his knee and both times it worked for him too

My faith in evidence and the scientific method makes me dubious on its effectiveness even when I had the personal experience of it helping me, it’s a tough position to be in intellectually

Could you advise what your view is on acupuncture and its effectiveness and does it pass muster

      • I don’t really have any views on acupuncture. I really just don’t know enough about it. There is certainly some physical intervention happening (there are needles being inserted into the body), but, I’m way out of my depth when opining on whether or not it has any effect beyond that of placebo treatment (as many do attest).

        • ozsportsdude says:

That’s such a great answer, one of the main things wrong with internet culture is everyone has an opinion on everything whether they know anything or not (thats the curse that afflicts most of the people you fight with on here)

So ‘I don’t know’ is the perfect answer

          • wzrd1 says:

From what I’ve read, acupuncture was equally as effective as a placebo.
That said, the placebo effect is a very real and well documented phenomenon.

  8. Dear Hank, I’m considering compiling a Woo Rating on my own blog for Australian universities by combing their websites. I’m keen to see a push at Government level to withhold Commonwealth funding from the worst offenders. Wanted to check whether it’s ground you’ve covered? Alternatively, you may want a “lead researcher”? Pls inbox me. JS

Its not chiropractic. The statement that had me scratching my head was ” Posture improves and spinal degeneration can reverse”. First time I have heard that. Facepalm!

  12. David says:

Just doing a quick search –

Number of chiros in Oz – 4200

Number of chiros in CAA – 2700

Number of chiros in COCA – ??

    • Cheers. Found a 2013 one, via the CBA, which says 4399 total.

I think the CAA number might include CAA students, who are given free membership (I’ve only heard this, I’m not sure). I’m doubting they would return my emails. They haven’t in the past.

COCA would be very forthcoming if I asked. They are exactly the same as normal people.

    • Trevor says:

David..your point would be? If you want to play the numbers game maybe we should discuss the number of medical practitioners with the AMA.

  13. Trevor says:

I am going to start using my twitter account before firing up 🙁 Sorry David.

  14. Thinking Chiro says:

The answer to you number problem is in the CAA’s 2013 financial statements. Membership fees divided by cost of single membership. Member subscriptions for 2013 = $1,556,907. Membership 1st year grad $400, 2nd year grad $900, 3rd year onwards $1800. These are approximate figures as I have not had anything to do with the CAA for many, many years. If you average it at say $1200 that gives you a paying membership of approximately 1297. You may want to research this further to get accurate figures but it may give a general approximation. I tried to find COCA’s financial statements but had no luck, so a polite request would probably work. COCA membership is $390 and gives you everything that the CAA offers and more. Interesting. There is also a wealth of information on state membership etc Enjoy.

  17. DS says:

    Hello All,

I’ve resisted commenting here but enough is enough. Well done. I suspect that a good proportion of our profession are sick and tired of the unmitigated evangelism however I doubt people really understand what the primary problem is. I’ve spoken with collegues and friends who just can’t see the problem. Overwhelmingly everyone sees it as being someone else – medicine, pharmacy, collegues, when in fact we are all to blame. Even the moderates (and I will include current President Laurie Tassel) have no idea that the problem is a profession based in a disproven (back in the 18th century) dogma. Vitalism. But wait. Even the eminent Francis Collins (genome project and now head of NIH) is like Mr Tassel a devout Christian. My sister worked for missionary surgeons who prayed before reattaching female genitals. All professions have their issues, malpractices, etc. Yes however only one major health profession isn’t based in a culture of scientific rigour, methodology, sceptical enquiry and academic argument. Ours is the only one based in the idea that a magical life force is real. That’s it. Intelligent people subjugate themselves to science and decide that what is true is more important than liking ones beliefs. We prefer beliefs. No need to enquire. No need for research – unless you can make it fit. No need to diagnose (when it’s always the same problem – a lack of life). No need to argue just hold hands, sing and agree. No need to listen to symptoms or diagnose. And definitely NEVER EVER admit failure and lack of success in treating a,b,c (like we hear every second day from other professions) There’s nothing so warm and cosy as ignorance. Just don’t ever dissent and whatever you do don’t point out to friends that the emperor isn’t wearing any clothes. It doesn’t go well. I’ve rarely seen such selfishness from a profession. For all it’s problems medicine keeps changing, learning, investigating, improving. We stand aside and bleat then use their research and try to call it our own. Each month someone has made up a new fix all technique based on woo. It’s a disgrace. We could own the field of conservative management of spine related disorders but prefer wealth creation and practice building. Such a waste. Associating with misinformers, ejected from a university and still blaming others. Dissenters have tried to do something and have met with stonewalling and defamation. Thankyou for having the balls to confront blatant idiocy and drag us into the 21st century.

“There is no polite way to inform someone that they have lived their life in folly” (Dennett)

  18. Thinking_Chiro says:

    In relpy to DS:
Have you thought about applying for the position of CEO of the CAA since McNamara just quit! They could use some critical self assessment and thinking that leads to change.
To the chiropractic “philosophers” in the comments section above, if you bother to look up what philosophy means you would be surprised. It does not mean blind adherence to an outdated dogma, the best definition is quoted here:
“The presentation of opinions, theories, or advice isn’t philosophy, no matter what the content. Doing philosophy involves thinking about things in a certain (rigorous, questioning) way, offering arguments for one’s ideas, meeting arguments against them, and being prepared to change one’s mind.”
    That says it all.
Keep using philosophy the way it was meant to be used Hank. Well Done!

  19. DS says:

I’d like to restate that this is not about individuals only the ideas themselves and the unwillingness to have them tested. This quite simply is the result of a professional culture which has allowed itself to continue basing itself on an idea which only has two positions. You either accept vitalism or you don’t. If you are naive of scientific methodology (the result of educational culture and conditioning) then like a person brought up in a fundamentalist church you simply wont see the wood from the trees. As scientist Michael Shermer (once a born again christian) remarked, when you are in it its all completely coherent. You can’t blame junior colleagues who ask “don’t you beleive?!” They’ve been conditioned. You can’t blame moderates who shrug in a ‘what can I do’ way. After all many think if we drop what we do we will just be back pain Drs. I understand. Thats a simplistic and one dimensional appraisal of what we do. The specialist conservative diagnosis and management etc definition is already what we are IDd as, definable and not restricted to sore backs. I think if it was explained well most chiros would be quite compelled by the categorisation. No profession actually ‘owns’ it. Ironically the standard of education is high (NSW and VIC) but perhaps this will illustrate what I mean. Only once did the professor of anatomy scold us. One day when we began on the ANS she said “this is the only problem i have with you (us). Your anatomy simply doesn’t exist”. She was of course referring to the ubiquitous ‘spine simulator’ which shows a fictitious direct pathway between spinal somatosensory and visceral function. Ie push this vertebra and you will directly influence x organ. Well if you accept that you dont know neurology. But we were taught so much neurology. What’s going on?!

It comes back to the culture. Ignorance is so ingrained that not only do we spout beleifs as fact but we can actually ignore anatomical fact. ‘Patients wouldn’t understand’, shrug, nasty look. As if any excuse is ok. We wouldn’t accept that standard from anyone else. Why ourselves? Don’t we care? It’s so sad because the spine is directly controlled by what is called midline neurology. As a result people do come to us not only with spine symptoms but disturbed balance, functional movement disorders and plenty more which often respond well. We even pick up serious cases if we’re bothered to check. Its rare but it’s our duty of care. However because many accept dogma they cannot read research and interpret findings, cannot apply that to clinical matters. What happens? We continue to see only 8% and we dont get to manage difficult cases. Why? The average chiro can’t and many wont communicate with the various medical professionals in the same language so they don’t refer. Ive brought this up but so indoctrinated are we that we will sooner stay marginalised than learn to work as a team. In the end the public (who we say we want to help) never see us. How many do we help then?! Back to 8%. Back to the margin. Back to some made up technique and practice building. The public loses.

So really most problems issue from the fundamental problem of foundation. The ‘straights’ are correct that if you set your philosophy all else naturally follows. Unfortunately that basis is a religion and you cannot under any circumstances get anywhere if you already beleive you have the answer. So back to science and its methodology – the honesty machine – we humans are inherently easily fooled, we love a magic trick, same goes for all people and professions which is why NOTHING will change unless we accept that the profession subjugate itself to science and allow critical thinking and debate. We need to listen to the likes of researcher Heidi Haavik and she needs to stop talking about vitalism (with Dr Weiner and Bruce Lipton (omg what a shame, what a loss of a scientist)). Then we’d get somewhere.

Yes I heard about the CEO. I didn’t know what had happened and I still don’t.

  24. KW says:

Hi Hank, thanks for the wonderful work you do exposing quack Chiropractors. What I’m more alarmed by, is pro anti-vaccination Doulas. These doulas are entering hospitals and birthing rooms as birth aids while promoting anti-vaccination choices, and horrifyingly putting newborns and others at risk because they are not vaccinated and/or neither are their children. Do you know if there is a medical association monitoring them? or are they self regulated?

    • Gidday. I think the first thing to do is identify individuals. From there we can ascertain which hospitals and health services they are entering. After that we can contact the hospitals seeking that they are aware that unvaccinated health workers are entering the workplaces, most likely against policy. If we have no luck we can take it to ministers.

You can email me on reasonablehank at gmail dot com if you have any individuals in mind.

  25. Hey Hank,

Thank you for keeping the profession on its toes, so to speak. I am a chiropractor who subscribes to the philosophies of COCA, multimodal therapy, am pro-vaccines, and strive to be an evidence based practitioner. In my view, the chiropractic profession shoots itself in the foot by allowing all sorts of treatment to be used under the chiropractic umbrella. We provide adjustments to joints which aren’t moving the way they should, and we are taught to provide physical therapeutic modalities (TENS, trigger point therapy, dry needling in some cases, etc.) where indicated, in order to treat painful structures. Outside of these evidence based approaches which are taught at chiropractic universities, other treatment modes should be required to distinguish themselves from chiropractic. If you do neuro-emotional technique (NET), then you should have to advertise your business as “Chiropractic AND NET”, not just chiropractic. There’s a massive number of people I have talked to who have said “I went to a chiropractor, and they tapped on my head” or some other bogus voodoo, and thereby have the impression that these “treatments” are part of the chiropractic paradigm, and in my opinion, this mars or otherwise clouds the profession as a whole. We are not witch doctors! The Manga report (amongst others) proved chiropractic to be a safe and effective treatment paradigm, why are we allowing other weird pseudoscience to besmirch this genuine research.

Thanks again for being a voice of reason, hopefully you’ll have something good to report from myself and other practitioners who employ reasonable thought.

    Regards,
    A Sane Chiropractor

    • Thanks Aaron. Slowly but surely moderate chiros are finding their voices; but, until the CBA starts rejecting unfounded modalities, and taking complaints and concerns more seriously, the progress will be even slower.

Wow, now I know why I removed reasonable and polite debate from Australian National Review, when they can’t logically answer your questions or realise you have a valid point they threaten and call you names and the most irritating ” wake up” do your “research”. Unlike them I do reasearch for a living and have a higher degree in a health science so I actually know what I am talking about as opposed to the utter conspiracy nuts.
Some anti- vaxxers can mount a rational debate about some vaccines – Hep B, pertussis, and the rationale of no vaxx no play. These don’t have conspiracy theories and most likely do vaccinate with most vaccines and just question the need and effectiveness of a few. These guys get shot down by the extremists too.
I another idiot claims something medically and physically impossible is a vaccine damage I will scream. If they quote increased rates of cancer using a graph of actual diagnoses I will despair and their lack of any medical or science literacy when clearly diagnoses go up when the population doubles. Yet they feel they have ” woken up” and need to spread their stupidity online. If your going to spread information online make sure you know what your talking about. It would be like me sprouting on like an expert in car mechanics when all I know is medical.
Anyway I have to stop trying to correct nonsense on nonsense sites as it is making me cranky and I have to stop commenting to avoid the aggression of the nutty preachers of vaccine hate.
